Activity description

Check with your city or a local organization to participate in the naturalization of public spaces. Some cities even provide the trees and flowers. It’s a great outdoor activity to collaborate as a team!

What does it impact ?

  • Developing leadership and confidence : Everyone can take an active role in organizing or executing tasks, which highlights individual strengths and helps participants build confidence in their abilities. Natural leaders may even emerge spontaneously in this kind of setting.
  • Optimizing collaboration and work quality : By coordinating efforts to reach a tangible goal like transforming a shared space, participants learn to divide tasks effectively, support one another, and make use of each other’s strengths. This dynamic enhances collective work and strengthens day-to-day collaboration reflexes.

What should the organizer prepare ?

  • Contact local authorities or an organization in your area to get information about available naturalization programs.
  • Ensure all planting tools (shovels, gloves, watering cans, etc.) are available and in good condition.
  • Organize transportation for participants to the planting sites.
  • Plan for refreshments and snacks to keep energy levels up during the activity.
  • Inform participants about appropriate clothing and personal items to bring : boots, extra clothes, sun protection, etc.
  • Prepare a detailed work plan outlining planting steps and the role of each participant.

How to achieve our goals on the big day ?

  • Start with an introduction explaining the purpose of the activity and the importance of naturalizing shared spaces.
  • Create balanced teams and encourage collaboration and communication throughout the day.
  • Include break times so participants can rest, rehydrate, and socialize.
  • Encourage participants to share ideas and strategies to improve the planting process.
  • Organize a before/after photo session to capture the inspiring transformation of the space.
  • End the day with a relaxing group activity, like a picnic, to celebrate the team’s efforts and successes.

When is the right context for this activity ?

  • When the company wants to revitalize an outdoor area on its property, like a courtyard, rooftop, or parking lot, into a green and welcoming space for employees.
  • When the team feels the need to reconnect with nature and break out of the usual office routine.
  • When there’s a noticeable dip in team energy or motivation and everyone could use a breath of fresh air.
  • At the arrival of spring or summer, when the weather is favorable and the desire to enjoy the outdoors increases.
  • When a new CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiative is launched.
  • During Earth Day or an environment-themed week within the company.
  • When the team wants to be more involved in a tangible and eco-friendly initiative.

Other benefits

  • Strengthens the company’s image as a responsible and eco-conscious organization.
  • Improves public or private spaces over the long term.
  • Can generate positive local media coverage.

See what others have done 👋

  • In Spain, an engineering company turned a vacant lot into a community garden where employees planted flowers and shrubs, bringing beauty and biodiversity to the area.
  • In China, a large textile company reforested an area devastated by industrial pollution. A few years later, it was declared a nature reserve thanks to the employees’ sustained efforts. Turning a polluted space into a thriving ecosystem greatly motivated the company to continue its green actions.
  • In Thailand, a major hotel chain organized a day where staff planted mangroves along the coast to fight erosion and support the local ecosystem. By the end of the day, participants were amazed when hundreds of tiny blue crabs appeared in the newly planted areas.
  • A tech company in Finland planted a “digital forest” with trees equipped with sensors to track growth and environmental impact. The team was fascinated to discover that the collected data provided insights into carbon sequestration.
  • In Buenos Aires, a marketing firm greened the rooftops of their offices. Weeks later, bees settled in, and an unexpected collaboration with a local beekeeper began.
